Abejas / Abejas

The Abejas Youth Literacy Program is up and running at HdV! Saturday, June 14th was the grand opening for the program- and what a grand opening it was. Almost 50 children from the area registered early and showed up on Saturday with parents, neighbors, and friends to enjoy a morning of reading fun. As a special incentive all children who registered early were given a book bag loaded with school and reading materials. However, ALL children who participated in the event enjoyed a mini healthy breakfast, group story times, a fun craft/ art activity that tied into the stories read, and of course free books to continue the reading excitement at home. “This is such an exciting time for HdV!” gushed Marcy, the Abejas program director “Not only is the garden helping kids eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle but now we are helping them on a totally different level- through education and literacy. It just strengthens my belief in the garden and the benefits of having it in the community.” With the help of 9 amazing youth leaders from the community the Abejas Youth Literacy Program is currently meeting twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9- 11 a.m. The Abejitas- our younger readers meet from 9-10 a.m. and the Honeybees- our tween/ teen readers meet from 10- 11 a.m. If you would like your child or children to participate in the fun, registration is open year round- just fill out a quick registration sheet and waiver for your child at the garden.

Last week HdV held a vermiculture workshop to help spread the knowledge about the importance (and many benefits!) of having worms in our garden. Workshop participants learned all about ways that worms improve soil, what they like to eat, why we use them, and even how to build a worm bin. Thanks to a generous donation from a lovely donor we had enough materials to build two new worm bins for the garden! Each bin will hold approximately one cubic yard of worm compost and will certainly contribute to the health and fertility of our garden.

¡Intercambio de semillas! / Seed Swap!

Last month HdV held their third seed swap, hosted by the Ontario Public Library. The seed swaps are a great opportunity for HdV or home gardeners to trade seeds that they have bought or collected from their home garden with other gardeners in the area to help increase variety in healthy eating choices. This time a handful of families participated in the swap that also offered participants a learning experience about seeds- the most essential part of our food system. The HdV family would like to send our sincerest thanks to the library for partnering with us to bring this event to the public. We look forward to swapping more seeds in the future- so keep a lookout for upcoming swap dates!
