Taking a moment to HEAL

On Saturday, Feb. 9^th the whole HdV crew spent the day at De Anza Park in Ontario participating in the Kaiser-Permanente HEAL Zone festival. The “Healthy Eating Active Living” festival was a way to kick off the $1 million dollar healthy living grant that Kaiser-Permanente has awarded the city as well as to inform the Ontario community of existing and upcoming programs/ services that are or will soon be available in the area (Like an awesome community garden!! J).

Kaiser has stated that the HEAL Zone program will focus on three specific goals over the next three years:

-Decrease calorie consumption- especially sugar sweetened beverages

-Increase consumption of healthy foods and beverages- such as fresh fruits and vegetables

-Increase physical activity




While at the event HdV members got a chance to talk to community members about the garden and present our mini-model as a visual of what can be accomplished through community cooperation. More importantly though, HdV members had ample time to LISTEN to community members/ residents to hear about what their visions for the city were and how we could help aid in making those visions into reality. All HdV members were ecstatic about the overwhelming interest from the residents in our community garden project as well as their desires to have fresh produce available in the area. Hearing it from the community members themselves has definitely motivated us to keep working hard in getting the garden up and running!

In addition to building relationships with Ontario residents HdV members also had a chance to talk to different community organizations and gain more insight as to how we can improve our own program to better benefit the Ontario residents. A fan favorite and definitely an ally to HdV throughout our developing process was Bing from the Heritage Farmer’s Market. His positive attitude and endless smile greeted each resident as he handed out hundreds of free items of fresh produce. El Sábado, 09 de febrero todos los miembros de HdV pasamos el día en el parque De Anza en Ontario para participar en el festival HEAL Zone de Kaiser-Permanente. El festival tomo tema de "Alimentación saludable, Vida Activa" y era una manera de iniciar la beca de $1 millón de dólares que Kaiser-Permanente ha adjudicado a la ciudad para promotor vidas mas saludables, así como de informar a la comunidad de Ontario de los actuales y futuros programas y servicios que están o estarán pronto disponibles en la zona (¡como un jardín comunitario que por allí dicen que va estar increíble!J).

Kaiser ha declarado que el programa de la Zona HEAL se centrará en tres objetivos específicos para los próximos tres años:

-Reducir el consumo de calorías- especialmente en bebidas endulzadas con azúcar

-Aumentar el consumo de alimentos saludables- como frutas y hortalizas frescas

-Aumentar la actividad física

Durante el evento los miembros de HdV tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar con los residentes del área sobre el jardín y presentar nuestro mini-modelo como una representación visual de lo que podemos lograr con la cooperación de la comunidad. Aún, lo más importante fue que los miembros de HdV tuvieron mucho tiempo para ESCUCHAR a los residentes del área, cuales son sus visiones de la ciudad y cómo podemos ayudarlos a hacer esas visiones una realidad. Todos los miembros de HDV se quedaron sorprendidos por el enorme interés de los residentes en nuestro proyecto del jardín, así como sus deseos de tener productos frescos disponibles en el área. ¡Después de haber oído los deseos de los residentes de Ontario definitivamente nos ha motivado a seguir trabajando duro para conseguir el jardín lo más rápido posible!

 Además de construir relaciones con los residentes de Ontario los miembros de HDV también tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar con diferentes organizaciones comunitarias y obtener una visión más clara de cómo podemos mejorar nuestro propio programa para beneficiar mejor a los residentes de Ontario. Un programa favorito de los miembros (y sin duda un aliado de HDV a través de nuestro proceso de desarrollo) era Bing, representante de el mercado de agricultores Heritage. Su actitud positiva y una sonrisa interminable saludaron a cada residente mientras ellos repartieron más de cien de artículos de productos frescos.
