Y el compostaje continúa / And the composting continues

Con el verano llegando a su punto culminante... nuestros esfuerzos de compostaje están manteniendo muy bien atrás de el. Estos últimos meses hemos completado no solamente una... sino DOS montones de compostaje maravillosas que ahora están muy bien para hornearse en el sol… esperando a alcanzar su potencial completa. Pero sólo porque los dos montones están tomando los días con calma no significa que nosotros también estamos haciendo lo mismo. Los miembros y voluntarios de HdV han continuado a trabajar duro durante estos largos días de verano poniendo en marcha la creación de un tercer montón de abono! El abono durar unos seis meses para alcanzar su máximo potencial, así que es una buena idea de mantenernos adelante en nuestros esfuerzo- así podemos asegurar que todos los jardineros tendrán suficiente abono cuando lo necesiten. Gracias de nuevo a todas las tiendas y negocios que donan a nuestro programa de compostaje!

       

With summer reaching its peak… our composting efforts are keeping up just fine. These last couple of months we have completed not one… but TWO wonderful compost heaps that are now nicely baking in the sun- waiting to reach their full nutrient potential. But just because those two heaps are taking it easy doesn’t mean we are too. HdV members and volunteers have continued to work hard during these long summer days starting up a third compost heap! Since compost typically takes about six months to reach its full potential it is a good idea to stay ahead in our efforts- This way we can ensure all gardeners will have enough compost when they need it. Thanks again to the many (and generous) stores and businesses that donate to our compost program!

El sábado pasado HdV celebró su reunión mensual de información para la comunidad. La sesión se celebró en el Centro Comunitario Dorothy Quesada -justo en frente del jardín. Como siempre, la reunión fue un perfecta oportunidad para unir a la comunidad, disfrutar de deliciosos alimentos frescos y locales, y aprender cosas nuevas! Este mes HdV decidió centrar la reunión en la salud y los beneficios de comer productos orgánicos. Entre las muchas actividades planeadas para el día los asistentes participaron en una prueba de frutas orgánicas contra frutas no- orgánico y llegaron a escuchar una presentación increíble por Alexa Rishton sobre cómo leer las etiquetas de productos en las tiendas de comestibles. La participación de la comunidad era genial, pero nos encantaría ver caras nuevas en la próxima reunión. Marque su calendario la próxima reunión será el 17 de Agosto - esperamos verlos allí!




Last Saturday HdV hosted its monthly community information meeting. The session was held at the Dorothy Quesada Community Center- right in front of the garden. As always, the meeting was a great time for community bonding, enjoying yummy fresh and local food, and learning new things! This month HdV decided to focus the meeting on health and the benefits of choosing organic. Among many activities scheduled attendees participated in an organic vs. non organic taste test and got to hear an amazing presentation by Alexa Rishton on how to read produce labels at the grocery stores. The turn out was great but we would love to see more new faces at the next meeting. Mark your calendar- the next meeting will be August 17th - hope to see you there!

HdV community meetings are a great way to bond or form new relationships with community members, hear updates about the garden, learn about fruits/ vegetables, and enjoy some good food. The meetings are totally free and opened to gardeners of all ages. Hope to see you there!

La granja 'Unity' / Unity Farm

 

 

La semana pasada, los miembros de Huerta del Valle fueron generosamente invitados a hacer un recorrido por "Unity Farm" en Rubidoux, CA. Fue un verdadero placer para los miembros de HdV para visitar la granja orgánica de 10 + acres y aprender todo sobre el riego de agua, sembrando, cosechas, y mucho más. El 'Maestro Jardinero', Gabriel (que nos dio la guía) ha estado trabajando con el proyecto 'Market Makeover' en Ontario, un programa de Pitzer College que está tratando de introducir frutas y verduras frescas y locales en los mercados de Ontario. Mientras estábamos en la granja Gabriel nos mostró la amplia variedad de frutas y verduras que cultiva de zanahorias, las alcachofas, las cebollas, maíz, sandía y pepinos. También tuvimos la oportunidad de revisar la montana de abono de Unity- no podemos esperar para mostrarles la nuestra! Y todo crecido en Unity se cultiva orgánicamente sin químicos! Gabriel hasta les permite a los topos que vivan en la tierra. El ir a una granja de gran masa como Unity- que tiene éxito en sus esfuerzos orgánicos motiva totalmente todos en HdV a tratar de hacer nuestro jardín también tan increíble!

 



Last week Huerta del Valle was generously invited to take a tour of “Unity Farm” in Rubidoux, CA. It was a real treat for HdV members to tour the 10+ acre organic farm and learn all about watering, planting, harvesting, and so much more. ‘Master Gardener’, Gabriel (who gave us the tour) has been working with Pitzer College’s ‘Market Makeover’ project in Ontario- a program that’s trying to get fresh and local fruits and vegetables into Ontario’s corner markets. While at the farm Gabriel showed us the wide varieties of fruits and vegetables that Unity grows from carrots, artichokes, and onions to corn, watermelon, and cucumbers. We also got a chance to check out Unity’s unique compost heap- can’t wait to show them ours! And everything at Unity is grown organically- no chemicals allowed! Gabriel even lets the gophers live on the land rent free. Going to a massive farm like Unity that is successful in its organic efforts totally motivates everybody at HdV to try and make our garden just as awesome!

CRC / CRC

 

El mes pasado, un grupo de jóvenes voluntarios de HDV y ICUC fueron a Los Ángeles para asistir a una reunión de la Campaña de Derechos de la Comunidad para aprender acerca de su trabajo. Estando ahí el grupo estaba muy impresionado de ver las diferentes maneras en que las personas se pueden conectar y aprendieron diferentes métodos sobre cómo dirigir una reunión de la comunidad con su propia organización. El grupo regresó con grandes ideas que después nosotros incorporamos en nuestras reuniones mensuales. Este mes, el grupo volverá a asistir a una reunión de CRC. Será muy interesante escuchar acerca de todas las cosas que aprenden en esa reunión también. Gracias CRC!

 

Last month a group of youth volunteers from HdV and ICUC headed out to Los Angeles to attend a Community Rights Campaign meeting to learn about their work. While there the group was impressed to see the different ways that people connected and learned various methods on how to run a community meeting with their own organization. The group came back with great ideas that we later incorporated into our own monthly meetings. Later this month the group will go back to attend CRC’s meeting on the school to prison pipeline. It will be great to hear about all the things they learn at that meeting as well. Thanks CRC!!

Buena suerte Lucy! / Good luck Lucy!

Fue un fin de semana agridulce para la familia HdV. A pesar de haber tenido muchos voluntarios apoyándonos en los días de trabajo, viendo las parcelas de la primera etapa desarrollándose, y aumentando una adición significativa a nuestra pila de compostaje… también dijimos adiós a una amiga querida, Lucy.
Lucy Block ha sido parte de la familia HdV desde el principio. Antes de que se instalaron el cerco o la agua, antes de finalizar el acuerdo de uso de la tierra, incluso antes de que HdV tenía un nombre o logotipo -Lucy estaba allí! Durante casi dos años, ella ha estado trabajando duro tanto dentro como fuera del jardín para hacer HdV una realidad. Como "Urban Fellow" de Pitzer College, Lucy trabajó con miembros de la comunidad para asegurar que el mensaje y la visión de HdV se expresó realmente a la ciudad de Ontario, el departamento de Planificación, Nuestro equipo de abogados, y varias otras organizaciones.
Hace unos meses Lucy recibió una beca CORO y viajará a Nueva York para los próximos nueve meses. No hay ninguna duda en nuestras mentes que Lucy va a hacer trabajo increíble en el programa CORO y con cualquier organización que ella trabaje con en Nueva York. Aunque vamos a extrañar muchísimo a Lucy, le deseamos la mejor de la suerte y esperamos verla en el jardín en el futuro!





It was a bittersweet weekend for HdV. Despite having had many volunteers show their support at work days, seeing the phase 1 plots come together, and adding a significant amount to our compost heap we also said goodbye to one of our dear friends, Lucy.
Lucy Block has been a part of the HdV family since the VERY beginning. Before the fence or water were installed, before the land use agreement was finalized, even before HdV had a name or logo- Lucy was there! For almost two years she has been working hard both in and out of the garden to make HdV a reality. As the Pitzer Urban Fellow, Lucy worked closely with community members to ensure the HdV message and vision was accurately expressed to the City of Ontario, the City of Ontario's Planning Dept., our team of lawyers, and various other organizations.
In the Spring Lucy was awarded a CORO Fellowship and will head to New York for the next nine months. There is no doubt in our minds that Lucy will do amazing in the CORO program and any organization she works with in New York. Although we will miss Lucy dearly, we wish her the best of luck and look forward to seeing her at the garden in the future!
